Northern Village is now a BCorp
September 17, 2018
We are pleased to announce that Northern Village is now a Certified B Corporation. This means that we have achieved the international standard of certification as "people using business as a force for good."
We are very proud to be part of a growing number of companies in Guelph and around the world who have achieved this certification. B Corps include major brands such as Patagonia, HootSuite, KickStarter and Danone, as well as local companies such as Neighbourhood Group (The Wooly, Borealis and Mijidaa), FLOW Office Wisdom, Lucky Iron Fish and Shared Value Solutions. We are in good company.
Certified B Corporations meet the highest standards of overall social and environmental performance, expand their legal responsibilities to include consideration of stakeholder interests, and collectively build a community of like-minded companies around the world. There are more than 1,200 Certified B Corporations from over 120 industries and nearly 50 countries with one unifying goal – to redefine success in business. B Corporations are leaders of the global movement of People Using Business as a Force for Good.
There are numerous critera to BCorp certification. The ones most applicable to Northern Village are:
- Over half our business is with purpose-driven organizations, including non-profits, charities and educational institutions. The fact that we offer discounts to charities and non-profits helped with certification.
- Our customers are local. Over 90% of our business is generated within 80km of Guelph. We also use local suppliers whenever possible.
- We are dedicated to paying a living wage to our employees.
- We are dedicated to reducing our impact on the environment.
Although it was challenging at times, we believe the process of documenting our business practices has deepened our understanding of the good that we have been doing. We also look forward to setting goals on how we can improve ourselves even more in the coming years. We also look forward to working with other BCorps to further expand the BCorp movement.
We also feel that through the process of BCorp certification, we are in a better position to help our customers succeed.
